I love the idea of baking themed sugar cookies for every holiday on the calendar, but somehow most holidays end up passing me by without a single cookie to be had. But now that Tyler is in school and I have a few extra minutes to myself, I really had no excuse not to make some fall sugar cookies.

I'm terrible about collecting cookie cutters, many of which remain hidden and forgotten about deep down in my cluttered baking drawers. So I feel a little less guilty about my stash every time I can bring a few out and put them to good use.

I used a new recipe, mostly because I don't have a standby favorite and because I really can't remember what I used last time. It was a little serendipitous actually because I finally found a sugar cookie that holds its shape through the baking process. Love that! I found the recipe
here on the Food Network website, but ended up halving the ingredients to make the dough more manageable.

Aren't they cute? For the frosting I used Alton Brown's
recipe for Royal icing, but added paste food coloring to get deep shades of yellow, orange and red. I think they taste similar to those yummy lofthouse cookies that I love. This is definitely my new favorite cookie/frosting combo.
